The Project:
We are thrilled to announce the successful completion of a sophisticated grain drying store in Hereford, a project commissioned by the prestigious Duchy of Cornwall Estate. From the initial design through to practical completion, Knights led as the main contractor, handling every phase with meticulous attention to detail and engineering precision.
With the harvesting season approaching, our client, the Duchy of Cornwall, needed a viable solution to store their grain at Lower Blakemere Farm in order to maintain the quality and safety of their grain. Knights Construction were appointed as the Principal Contractor for the project, which included the earthworks, civils, concrete works, superstructure works, namely a steel portal-framed building and the supply and installation of a cutting-edge grain drying flooring system. Also included within the Knights Construction package was the design of the foundations, floor slabs and cast-in-situ concrete walls. In order to meet the clients’ requirements, it was imperative that Knights met key program dates to ensure the grain drying building was operational in time for the harvesting season.
Works Completed:
The project began with our design of the foundations, robust concrete floors and 3.5-meter-high cast-in-situ walls, crafted to withstand the demanding environment of a large-scale grain storage facility.
Following acceptance of the design, Knights’ extensive civil and construction capabilities came into play across every aspect of the build, with our team managing earthworks, civils, substructure, and superstructure to ensure a solid and enduring framework. Throughout this period, Knights ensured constant communication with the client and the entire supply chain was maintained to deliver a successful project on time and on budget.
A major highlight of the project was the installation of a cutting-edge grain drying system. This advanced system employs strategically placed mesh ventilating strips, supported by pressure-treated softwood bearers, enabling efficient airflow and maintaining optimal drying conditions.
We’re pleased to report that the project was completed on schedule and to the complete satisfaction of the client. This state-of-the-art grain drying store is now fully operational, standing as a testament to our dedication to quality—a project truly fit for royalty!
